Alberta was born November 10,1928 to Clarence (C.J.) and Elsie (Doherty) Hamilton in Warren County, Iowa. She was the second of eight children. She passed away on June 30, 2023 at the age of 94.
Alberta or Bertie as she was known to the family, started first grade at the age of 4. Her parents were approached to allow her to go early as there was only one little girl starting country school that year. She graduated from Liberty Center High School at the age of 16, the class of 1944.
Alberta was working as a grocery store clerk when she met a good looking and persistent Robert (Bob) Ruble. They were married October 10,1945. Four children were born to this union, Roberta (Bobbi), Lonnie, Gregory and Kathy.
Bob and Alberta moved to Story County, Iowa where Bob worked a variety of jobs until he settled at the McCallsburg Co-op. Alberta worked at RH Donnelly Corp in Nevada, Iowa. She started as a production worker on the night shift in 1956 and was a production account coordinator when she retired more than 25 years later. They purchased the McCallsburg Co-op service station in 1970 and built a new service station a few years later. The Ruble-Irvin Co-op was a favorite coffee/news stop for the men in town and a favorite stop for all the kids in town.
Alberta always enjoyed the home she and Bob built in 1975 in McCallsburg. She was a voracious reader from an early age. She always got a book for Christmas-and 3 pair of underwear. Of note-her children never got underwear for Christmas!! She enjoyed puzzles and games. She was competitive whether it was checkers, cribbage, hand & foot, or Skip Bo. She showed no mercy-even for young children. Alberta held high expectations for herself and her children. She always encouraged them to do their best at whatever they did.
When Bob and Bertie sold the service station, they became full-time RVers. For the next 14 years they enjoyed winters in the southern US and summers in the McCallsburg area. They made special friends during that time. They especially enjoyed the 6 weeks they and 3 other couples spent driving through Cananda and touring Alaska in their pick-up campers. Alberta left copies of letters at a local historical museum her uncles had sent from Alaska while searching for gold. Bob and Alberta always felt both lucky and grateful for those years.
Alberta is survived by her children, Bobbi (Garry) Brandenburg of Albion, Iowa, Greg (Ann) Ruble of Waukee, Iowa, and Kathy Ruble of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren: Craig & Catherine Brandenburg, Jeff & Alicia Brandenburg, and Nathan & Holly Ruble. She is also survived by 10 great grandchildren: Chris (Amber) Brandenburg, Cameron Brandenburg, Caitlyn (Demetre) Barker, Molly, Cole, Cooper, and Piper Brandenburg, Georgia, Rider and Ames Ruble.
