Debra "Deb" Jean Shugar, 66, of Prairie City, Iowa, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 30, 2025, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Prairie City Community Building in Prairie City. A celebration of life service will also be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Ackley Community Center in Ackley. A private family burial will be held at the West Friesland Cemetery in Ackley, Iowa. Deb was born in Grundy Center, Iowa to Ronald and Carol (Janssen) Glenn on March 22, 1959. She grew up in Ackley where she attended Ackley Geneva School where she graduated with the class of 1977. Following high school, Deb attended Hawkeye Community College where she earned her associates degree. She married Kory Shugar in Des Moines on September 17, 1988. The couple relocated to Des Moines and later Prairie City. Deb worked as a paraprofessional for Newton School for over 15 years before retiring in 2019. Deb also had the entrepreneurial spirit where she created her own pet food company, raised and showed Bullmastiffs across the United States, and raised goats. Deb loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandsons. She also loved horses, goats, barrel racing, animals, her flower garden, making seashell wind chimes, and coffee dates with Nancy Moore. Those left to cherish her loving memory are her husband Kory Shugar of Prairie City, IA; children Nikki (Matt) Borts of Baxter, IA and Kristin (Kevin) Garner of Colfax, IA; grandchildren Grant and Landen Borts of Baxter, IA, and Kaden and Keegan Garner of Colfax, IA; father Ronald Glenn of Ackley, IA; siblings Darla (David Teske) Glenn of Ackley, IA, and Terri (Steve) Glas of Des Moines, IA; sisters-in-laws Kimberly (Dewain) Wiebke of Greene, IA and Kara Shugar-Davis of Cedar Falls, IA; brother-in-law Kameron (Staci) Shugar of Huxley, IA; nieces and nephews Jessica (Brandon Dilley) Teske of Steamboat Rock, IA, Jakob Glas of Altoona, IA, Raelynn Dilley of Steamboat Rock, IA, Devon Davis of Cedar Falls, IA, Sydney Davis of Cedar Fallos, IA, Martin Shugar of Des Moines, IA, Austin Shugar of Huxley, IA, Elizabeth Leu of Huxley, IA, and Anastasia Leu of Huxley, IA; many cousins; and close friends. Deb was preceded in death by her mom Carol, in-laws Gary and Marlys Shugar, and step-mother-in-law Sheryol Shugar. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
