Derek Winfield Hodges, 25, of Des Moines, Iowa finished his race on Friday, January 8, 2021. The yellow caution flag is now out for all family, friends, and anyone who will listen - do not take any pills unless prescribed to you by a medical doctor! A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at the Gift of the Spirit, 10520 New York Avenue, Urbandale, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow and begin at 7:00 p.m. A private family burial will be held in the Berwick Cemetery at a later date. Derek was born on November 13, 1995 in Des Moines, Iowa to Sam and Deanna (Foy) Hodges. He grew up in Saydel racing BMX bikes and go carts. In high school he wrestled and played football. He graduated with the Saydel High School Class of 2014. Following school, he attended DMACC and began working with his father in the family lawn care business. Derek was a member of the IMCA, IKF Go Cart, MBA and ABA BMX Bike Racing associations. Derek loved to spend time with his family and friends, race stock cars, work with his family, fishing, and hunting. Those left to cherish his loving memory are his parents Sam (Jodi) Hodges of Des Moines, IA, and Deanna Hodges of Des Moines, IA; siblings Dylan Mattox, Alana (Terance) Clark, and Lydia (Daniel Weir) Krzyzak; grandparents Howard Hodges, Margaret Foy; uncles Leonard Hodges, David (Ruby) Hodges, Robert (Michelle) Hodges, and Mark (Tracy) Hodges; many cousins, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Martin Foy, Mary Lou Hodges; aunt Vickie Hodges; and uncle Gregory Hodges. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
