Edna was born the sixth of seven children on March 16, 1930 in rural Murray, Iowa, on the farm, to Marion and Ruth (Kirk) Garrett. She attended school at Murray High School and graduated with the class of 1947. Immediately following school Edna began teaching at a one room school house in rural Murray. She married the love of her life Jack Marriott in the Murray Methodist Church. In 1954 Jack and Edna moved to Urbandale, Iowa where they both taught for the Urbandale Schools. Edna taught 3rd and 4th grade at Olmstead Elementary until her retirement in 1987. Over the years as teaching requirements changed Edna was able to continue her teaching career as she obtained the needed higher education to do so. She graduated from Drake University first with her associates and then her bachelor's degree. Edna had a great gift as a teacher and would devote her time to anyone in need or willing to learn. In Polk City she was a member of Friends of the Library and she even taught English to immigrants in Des Moines. She was a true outdoors woman and loved visiting Montana yearly since 1954. In later years they had a cabin there where she enjoyed spending time, fishing, being in nature, and spending time with the Pipe Creek Gang. Edna was the best cook and even won a chili cooking contest in Polk City. She also loved to spend time with her family, play cards at the senior center, learning and teaching history most especially the Civil War, writing books and poems, mushroom hunting, huckleberry picking, making jam, nature, and playing cribbage. Edna was truly a caretaker and never had a bad word to say about anyone. She was a member at the Polk City United Methodist Church. Those left to cherish her loving memory are her son's Rick Marriott of Perry, IA and James (Peggy) Marriott of Polk City, IA; grandchildren Cora (Tom) Arnburg, Aaron Marriott, Luke (Elena) Marriott; great-grandchildren Sofiya, Aleksandra, Kristian, Wesley, and Dorothea; sister Ruth Burnett; many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
