Obituary

Everett Aaron Russell, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and steadfast pillar of the Baxter community, passed peacefully on June 9, 2026, at the Accura Healthcare Center in Newton, surrounded by the warmth of his loving family. At 81 years old, Everett's journey, marked by dedication, care, and a deep connection to those around him, leaves behind a legacy cherished by all who knew him.

Born on January 26, 1945, in Colfax, Iowa, to Edwin and Doris (Horn) Russell, Everett's roots were firmly planted in the heart of Iowa. He grew up in Baxter, where he graduated from Baxter High School’s Class of 1963, before pursuing his passion for mechanics at the Omaha Trade School. His skilled hands and steady spirit led him to a lifelong career that began at Joel Johnson Cadillac in Newton and blossomed through years at Van Duseldorf in Colfax and Maytag, where he devoted over three decades of service until his retirement in 2001.

Everett’s love extended beyond work—he mastered restoring his antique truck, was an avid outdoorsman who found peace in hunting and fishing, especially treasured trips to Canada, and was a generous cook known for frying bluegills to share with friends and family. His leadership as a Boy Scout Troop Leader and his active role at the Evangelical Free Church of Baxter underscored his commitment to community and to guiding the next generation.

In 1979, Everett built a home outside Baxter, a place of comfort and gathering that symbolized his hands-on spirit. After marrying Darlene Bower, with whom he had two sons, and later uniting with Linda Houston in 1993, together they nurtured a full, vibrant family life. In his retirement years, Everett embraced his role as lead maintenance man at the Baxter Nursing Home until a fall signaled his full retirement to the joys of “grandpa duty,” a role he cherished greatly.

Everett is lovingly remembered by his wife Linda; children Josh (Cheryl) Russell, Zach (Kelly Gulbrandson) Russell, Clinton (Kara) Wahe, Stacy (Ron) Rose, Lori (Ron) Boothroyd, and Jennifer (Matt) Bell; doting grandchildren Regan, Camryn, Lincoln, Matt, Andy, Landon, Ryann, Bryan, Travis, Jeremy, Skyler, Evelyn, Olivia, and Caleb; great-grandchildren Brayden, Nolan, Kendel, Addison, Edward, Jonathan, Rowan, Nanomi, and Addie; sister Esther (Daral) Grife; and a wide circle of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Donald, Ellen, Millie, and Rosemary.

A celebration of Everett’s remarkable life will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., with a time of sharing at 5:00 p.m., followed by burial at Restland Cemetery in Baxter. Those wishing to honor Everett’s memory may direct contributions to the Baxter Community School Kids in Need lunch program, continuing his spirit of kindness and support.

Fredregill Funeral & Cremation Care has been honored to assist the Russell family during this time of remembrance. Everett Aaron Russell’s life was a testament to devoted service, love, and enduring community spirit—a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.
