Obituary

George Leonard Alitz Jr., 78, of McCallsburg, Iowa, peacefully passed away in his sleep at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown, Iowa on March 5, 2023. A committal service at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Kathy Sandmann officiating. A private family burial will be held at Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg. Visitation will follow in the fellowship hall of Bethany Lutheran Church. George was born in Winona, Minnesota on December 7, 1944, to parents George Sr. and Eleanor Amelda Alitz (Frey.) George grew up in Winona and attended Winona High School graduating with the class of 1963. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed in Germany. Upon returning home, George began working as a driver for various trucking companies, eventually driving with Vierkandt Trucking for many years. George married Beverly Risdal on June 21, 1992 in Ames, Iowa. George was a longstanding member of the McCallsburg chapter of the American Legion. He and Beverly were also members of Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. In his free time, George liked collecting model trains, and was passionate about classic cars. George was also a great storyteller, and was always known to have a story or two to share at church, parties, or family gatherings. Those left to cherish George's loving memory are his children Shadow Alitz, Ed Alitz, and Shawn Alitz; step children Butch (Mary) Elliott of Boone, IA, Lori (Rex) Gross of Madrid, IA, Jeanne (Dan) Vellinga of Marshalltown, IA, Kim (Kevin) Jacobson of McCallsburg, IA, Lisa Griffith of Dallas, GA; grandchildren Dakota, Cisco, Tangee, Anthony, Dillon, Anissa, and McKenzie; step grandchildren Heidi (Travis) Garrett, Haley Elliott, Caleb Elliott, Jami (Jason) Gross-Toalson, Gavin Gross, Tyler (Libby) Jacobson, Shane (Kelsey) Jacobson, Seth Griffith, Stephen (Amelia) Wildt, Erica Wildt, Justin (Becca) Elliott, Nikki (Aaron) Ely, Brittany (Brandon) Shuey, and Nicole (Erik) Ostby; sister Carolyn Goetzman of Wheatland, WY; many great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many close friends. George was preceded in death by his parents; wife Beverly; his daughter Dawn Alitz; and stepson Doug Elliot. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
