A private family burial will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery in Marshalltown, Iowa. Gladys was born on February 21, 1932 in Marshalltown, Iowa to Elmo and Mildred (Halstead) Lutes. She grew up in Marshall County and graduated from Liscomb High School in 1950. Following school, she married the love of her life John Lane on August 6, 1950 at the Bangor Liberty Friends Church. The couple moved to New Providence where Gladys helped on the farm. To this union two children were born. Gladys was a member of the Bangor Liberty Friends Church where she assisted with the pot luck meals, Bethel United Methodist Church (Zearing), where she was a staple of the Bethel United Women's Organization, Sorosis Club (Zearing), and the Marshall County Farm Bureau. Gladys had a great love for her family and enjoyed spending time with them, especially her great-grandchildren. Her home was always full of love, laughs, and wonderful smells from the kitchen - family favorites including homemade noodles, rolls, zucchini bread, and Kringla. She loved reading, bible study, bird watching, and any kind of puzzles (crosswords, word finds, Sudoku, and jigsaw). Friends and family knew never to call at 6:30 as she'd be solving Wheel of Fortune puzzles with Pat Sajak. In her earlier years, she also enjoyed bowling, gardening, and sewing including embroidering dishcloths and making a quilt for each of her grandchildren. Those left to cherish her loving memory are her children Linda (Kevin) Miller, and Steven Lane; grandchildren Heather (Travis) Starr, Wade (Lyal) Rouse, Paul (Hannah) Lane, Andrew (Kendra) Lane, and Peter Lane; great-grandchildren Madison and Jackson Starr; siblings Charming Bennethum, Bob Lutes, Gilbert Lutes, Janet Vernon, and Janice Hughes; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, siblings Ted Thomas, Barbara Meyers, Harry Lutes, Freida Peterson, and Carroll Lutes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children's Hospital or Bangor Liberty Friends Church. Fredregill Funeral & Cremation Care has been entrusted with the care of Gladys and her family.
