Obituary

Harold L. Hill, 92, of Baxter, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2020 at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Per his wishes he will be cremated, and no services will be held. A private burial will take place at a later date. Harold was born on November 11, 1927 to Roy and Viola (Donaldson) Hill on the family farm. He attended school in Baxter and graduated with the class of 1946. Following school, he was drafted into the Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Germany for 18 months where he served as a medic with the 2nd Armored Division. On June 15, 1951 he married Coleen Krampe in Temple, Texas. Back in Iowa he began working at Maytag as an accountant. He later attended Drake University where he earned a bachelor's degree. After 30 years of working at Maytag he retired in 1980. The most important thing to Harold was his family, and he loved spending time with them. He also enjoyed traveling, motorcycling in the mountains, antique tractors and cars, reading. His traveling highlights included going back to Germany where he was stationed and later to Scotland to see the original recording of his Grandfather Donaldson's birth. Those left to cherish his loving memory are his wife Coleen Hill of Baxter, IA; children Rodney Hill of Baxter, IA and Ronda (Ken) Connelly of Cedar Falls, IA; granddaughters Karen (Joe) Newcomb of Cedar Falls, IA and Dr. Rachel (Grant) Atherton of Davenport, IA; great-grandchildren Elijah and Anna Newcomb. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ronald Hill. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for the Baxter Library.
