Obituary

James "Jim" Newton, 78, of Maxwell, Iowa, went home to his Lord on Friday, July 21, 2023. A memorial visitation will be held at the Collins Christian Church on Saturday, July 29, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A Masonic funeral rite will be held at 11:30 a.m. His memorial service will be held after visitation at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Scott Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Collins, Iowa. Jim was born on April 18, 1945, to John "Edward" and Alice (Beckner) Newton in Leon, Iowa. He grew up in Collins where he found his love for farming. Jim graduated from Collins High School with the class of 1963. Following school, he attended Iowa State University until he joined the Air Force. Jim served during the Vietnam Conflict. While in the service he married Carol Griffin on June 10, 1967, in Walla Walla, Washington Once he returned home from the service he farmed with his dad. The couple raised their family in Collins while Jim continued to work the land. He retired from farming in 1993 and then went to work for the DOT in Ames. Jim fully retired in 2008. Faith, family, and farming were truly the foundations of Jim's life. He was a member of the Collins Christian Church where he served in many capacities over the years including being an Elder, Deacon, and on the Church Board. Jim was also an active member of the Nevada Masonic Lodge #99, Lions Club, lead teams on 7 mission trips to Belize, Brothers in Blue, and Cursillo. He also served on the Collins School Board. Jim sponsored 2 families from Laos and sponsored 2 foreign exchange students. He was also privileged to travel on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC. Jim enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandkids, he loved farming, reading, traveling, camping, and spending winters in Tucson, AZ. Those left to cherish his loving memory are his wife of 56 years Carol of Maxwell; children Dan (Darlene) Newton, Rusty (Ashley) Newton, and Mandy (Chris) Wierson; grandchildren Jessica (Jake) Hall, John Newton, Janelle Newton, Laney Newton, Riley and Maci Lohmueller, Josie, Kenzi , Chloe and Cooper Wierson; great-grandson Evan Hall; sisters Mary Adams and Marie (Al) Van Roekel; sister-in-law Wanda Records; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial contributions may be directed to his family to be distributed to his favorite charities. Fredregill Funeral & Cremation Care has been entrusted with Jim and his family.
