John E. Lane, 88 of New Providence passed away on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, surrounded by his loving wife, daughter, and grandchildren. Visitation will be held on March 28, 2016, from 5-7 p.m. at the Bangor Liberty Friends Church. Funeral service will be held on March 29, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the Bangor Liberty Friends Church with Pastor Matt Bishop officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marshalltown, Iowa. John E. Lane was born on January 21, 1928, in Marshalltown to Delmar and Alida (Bru) Lane. He was raised in the Illinois Grove by his adoptive father Delos and mother Alida. He attended Liberty School and graduated in 1944 at the age of 16. He began farming with his family at a very early age and took over the farm when his father retired. He cultivated the farm through his retirement in 1992 and continued to meticulously maintain it for over two more decades. He was a dedicated and productive farmer who loved his work almost as much as he loved his family. He married Gladys Lutes on August 6, 1950, in Bangor, Iowa. He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Zearing for over 50 years and more recently a member of the Bangor Liberty Friends Church. He held a membership with the Marshall County A.S.C.S., served on the Minerva Valley Telephone Board of Director's for over 25 years, and was a member of the Marshall County Farm Bureau. Time that was not spent on the farm was dedicated to his friends and family. John loved visiting, drinking coffee with "the Old Fogies" coffee bunch, telling jokes, reading the paper (especially the funnys), reading books, and playing cards and dice. Those left to cherish his memories are his wife Gladys Lane; children Linda (Kevin) Miller, and Steven Lane; grandchildren Heather (Travis) Starr, Wade (Kate) Rouse, Paul (Hannah) Lane, Andrew (Kendra) Lane, and Peter Lane; great-grandchildren Madison and Jackson Starr; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. John was preceded in death by his parents and brother. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Bangor Liberty Friends Church. Fredregill Funeral Home, in Zearing, has been entrusted with the care of John and his family. Visitation Bangor Liberty Friends Church
