Obituary

Robert K.(Bob) Nuzum, age 67, formerly of Baxter, Iowa, passed away on June 15, 2011, at home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday June 25, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. in the Bethany United Church of Christ in Baxter with Pastor Bryant officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Bob was born December 19, 1943, in Baxter, Iowa, the son of A.L.(Al) and Mazie Nuzum. He graduated from Baxter High School in 1962. Having joined the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1961, he began his active duty service in 1962, including service aboard a destroyer in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He participated with the U.S. Naval blockade of Cuba in the fall of 1962. After his service in the U.S. Navy Bob attended college at Kansas State University. Bob then worked in sales and maintenance at his father's feed mill in Baxter for a few years. He farmed briefly first near Baxter and then near Panora, Iowa. Following the brief time of farming Bob moved to Dallas, Texas, where he worked at a tire plant, and then in maintenance for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1999. He married Sharon Vander Ploeg of Prairie City, Iowa on August 14, 1963. After he completed his Naval Service, they moved to Manhattan, Kansas while he attended Kansas State University. They divorced in 1967. He married Lorraine Zink of Baxter, Iowa on June 14, 1969 and they divorced in 1990. From this union two children were born. On August 14, 1990, Bob remarried his high school sweetheart and first wife, Sharon Vander Ploeg Creasy of Brandon, Florida. They first lived in Dallas, Texas, and then moved to Forney, Texas where they lived until his death. Those left to cherish Bob's loving memories are his wife, Sharon; a younger brother, Bruce Nuzum (Shirley) of Newton, Iowa; a younger sister, Lorra Nuzum of Ormond Beach, Florida; his son Raymond Nuzum of Fairplay, Colorado; his daughter Jennifer Oatman of Austin, Texas; a step-daughter, Tela Brunson Williams (Robert) of Brandon, Florida; grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and by his best friend since kindergarten, Ken Pfile (Wanda Smith) of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. He is preceded in death by his parents; an older brother, A.L. (Bill) Nuzum; a nephew, Tod Nuzum; and nieces Heather Nuzum and Carolyn Krueger. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
