Sandra Kay Armstrong, 85, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away surrounded by her loving family on Friday, July 21, 2023, at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at Grandview Funeral Home in Des Moines. Immediately following, her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor David Burling officiating. Her burial will follow in the Sunset Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. Sandra was born in Hardy, Iowa on June 21, 1938, to Hubert and Helene (Vought) Saxton. She grew up in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1956. Following school, Sandra attended Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing in Des Moines where she graduated in 1959 as a Registered Nurse. She married Jack Armstrong in Kellogg, Iowa on October 6, 1963. The couple resided in Des Moines where they raised their family together. Sandra worked on the pediatrics unit at Iowa Lutheran Hospital and later became the charge nurse until 1982. Sandra then took a position with Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines where she worked on the cardiac floor, until 2007. She retired at the age of 69 from nursing. In her younger years she was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Des Moines where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School. Sandra was also a member of the Iowa Lutheran Nursing Alumni and loved attending their annual banquets. She enjoyed spending time with her family, watching any sports but especially followed the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Iowa State Cyclones, ceramics, and being a part of the North Side Otters Swim Team. Those left to cherish her loving memory are her children Steven (Kim) Armstrong, Melissa (Troy) Thompson, and Melanie Armstrong; grandchildren Miranda, Cameron, Morgan, Jared, Jack, Chloe, and Madeline; sisters Marilyn Bent, Janelle (Mike) Press, and Jolene (Fred) Fredregill; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jack, and niece Annette Fredregill. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa Lutheran Alumni Association.
