Virgil Henry Saak, 96, of Baxter, passed away on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Baxter Health Care Center in Baxter, Iowa. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Bethany United Church of Christ, in Baxter, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethany United Church of Christ with Reverend Teressa Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Bethany Cemetery in rural Baxter. Virgil was born on the family farm outside of Baxter to Henry and Meta (Sanderman) Saak on May 12, 1920. He attended country school as a child then attended Baxter High School graduating in 1938. Following school Virgil farmed with his family. He married the love of his life, Doris Bach on August 29, 1945. The couple continued farming until 1988 when they moved into Baxter. Virgil was a member at Bethany United Church of Christ, the Jasper County Historical Society, the Jasper County Sheep Producers, Farm Bureau, and the Missouri Valley Wrench Club. He loved his family and spending time with them, collecting antique wrenches, whittling and carving wood, hand building furniture pieces, tractors, planting flowers, and going to the Iowa State Fair with Doris. They went together 68 years in a row. Those left to cherish Virgil's loving memories are his wife of 71 years Doris Saak; son Wayne (JuliAnn) Saak; and grandchildren Aaron Rouse, and Jenn (Julian) State. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant sister Edna.
